In a significant move for the cybersecurity industry, Portland-based security risk assessment startup DeepSurface has been acquired by AttackIQ, a leading Santa Clara, California-based security validation platform provider.
AttackIQ, renowned for its innovative approach to cybersecurity, specializes in Adversarial Exposure Validation (AEV) solutions. Their platform continuously simulates real-world cyberattacks to rigorously test and validate organizations’ security defenses, ensuring robust protection against emerging threats.
DeepSurface, established in 2017, was steered by two veteran security professionals: CEO James Dirksen, known for successfully selling RuleSpace to Symantec and his executive role at Formaltech, and CTO Tim Morgan, who brings extensive security consulting expertise to the table.
The startup’s innovative software platform revolutionizes security risk assessment by creating comprehensive “hacker roadmaps,” enabling organizations to identify and prioritize their most critical vulnerabilities effectively.
Regarding the acquisition, Dirksen shared on LinkedIn, “Embedding the DeepSurface product into the AttackIQ business is a perfect fit, allowing them to extend their security control validation and breach and attack simulation business. We can’t wait to see the powerhouse of a product combination this will be.”
Morgan expressed similar enthusiasm in his LinkedIn announcement, stating, “From day one, our mission at DeepSurface has been to empower security teams with smarter, more contextualized risk analysis — helping organizations focus on what truly matters. Joining forces with AttackIQ, a leader in security optimization and adversary emulation, allows us to take this mission to the next level.”
Prior to the acquisition, DeepSurface had secured $1 million in seed funding in September 2020, with Cascade Seed Fund leading the round and participation from SeaChange Fund and Voyager Capital.
